858 – Death of Æthelwulf

Æthelwulf was son of Ecbert and father of Alfred. He reigned Wessex from 839 until his death in 858. During his lifetime, he saw the court of Charlemagne in Aachen, but also fought of the Viking with the first Wessex naval fleet. At the time of his death, he was married to the young Judith of France (later better known as Judith of Flanders) who would later go on to marry his son Æthelbald.
