1053 – Death of Godwin, Earl of Wessex
Earl Godwin would have a large impact on English politics during the reigns of Aethelred II and Cnut the Great. He was closely related to Cnut’s family. His wife Gytha, of Danish descent, had a brother named Jarl Ulf who married Cnut’s sister Estrid. Godwin apparently had a stroke at a royal banquet and died in 1053. His daughter Edith went on to become queen consort of England and his son Harold would be king of England (see Encyclopaedia Britannica).
