1016 – Battle of Assundun

This was the defining battle between Edmund Ironside against the Danish invader, Cnut the Great. The defeat of the English was caused by the treachery of Eadric Streona. After the battle Edmund and Cnut signed a treaty whereby Edmund would rule Wessex and Cnut the rest of England. The battle site is in Essex, but the exact location is still debated.
