996 – Coronation of Otto III as Holy Roman Emperor

Otto was only three (!) when he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor. Though held hostage by the Duke of Bavaria at the start, his mother, the Byzantine princess Theophanu and his grandmother Adelaide of Italy, were able to regain the influence over her son and ruled in his stead until his came of age.
