31 December

870 – Battle of Englefield

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle reports of this battle. The Vikings were on a rampage, Northumbria and East Anglia had already fallen to them. They now set up camp near Reading. Aethelwulf of Berkshire and his army of West Saxons met them in battle. It was a West Saxon victory this day. But it was the start of a series of battles (Reading, Ashdown, Basing, Meretun) that would eventually see Alfred crowned in the next year.
