925 – Coronation of Æthelstan I

Æthelstan was crowned on the border of Wessex and Mercia in Kingston-upon-Thames. Raised in Mercia by his aunt Æthelflæd and the oldest son of Edward the Elder, he was elected heir in Mercia. Wessex was another matter, but his competition for the throne died days after his father did, leaving the way to the Wessex throne wide open. The rest is history, they say, but it is quite an impressive one.
