Charles the Fat

NameCharles III,
c 839 – 13 January 888
FamilyCarolingian dynasty.
His father is Louis the German, and his mother Emma.
Married Richardis (1 Aug 862 – div. 887).
He probably had only one illegitimate son.
Life876, succeeds his father as king of the East Franks but the regions in the kingom are divided between him and his brothers.
880, inherits Italy upon the death of his brother Carloman.
881, on 12 February he is crowned Holy Roman Emperor. He sends his armies to fight the Vikings in the Low Countries and pays them a ransom.
882, upon the death of his brother Louis the Younger he inherits the whole of East Francia.
885, in June he is offered the kingdom West Francia upon the death of Charles the Bald. At this time, it seems, Charles is already ill.
886, Charles fights the Vikings at Paris, and pays them a ransom.
887, secures his succession by adopting the son of Boso of Provence and his wife Ermengard. The same year, the Duke of Carinthia attacks Charles and deposes him.
