On This Day In The Viking Age

Start of Ýlir

The second month of winter in the old Icelandic calendar. Also known as the Frost month.

1148 – Death of Ari Thorgilsson

Perhaps this date is rather out of range for the Viking Age. Yet, I want to mention it because if the Icelander Ari Thorgilsson hadn’t written so many important texts during his lifetime, we would have been a whole lot poorer in knowledge and stories about the Viking Age. He is renowned for the Íslendingabók among others.
